# Maths Problem of the Weekthe Mean of Two Unknown Numbers

## +

If

$1 x + 1 y = 10$

and

$x ⁢ y = 10$

What is the mean of $x$ and $y$ ?

-/|\-

### Solution

The mean $x-=x+y2$
Multiplying both parts of the quotient by $xy$ gives
$x- = (x+y)⁢x⁢y2⁢x⁢y = 12 ⁢ ( 1 x + 1 y ) ⁢ x⁢y$
Substituting the values given we get $x- = 10×10 2 = 50$
