If

1 x + 1 y = 10

and

x y = 10

What is the mean of x and y ?

-/|\-

Solution

The mean x-=x+y2
Multiplying both parts of the quotient by xy gives
x- = (x+y)xy2xy = 12 ( 1 x + 1 y ) xy
Substituting the values given we get x- = 10×10 2 = 50
