The Problem:

Given

2x + 5 3 1 x A B C D O

Find the value of x

Solution:

The intersecting chords theorem states

|AO||BO| =|CO||DO|

where A, B, C and D are the point where the chords meet the circle, and O is where the chords cross.

From the diagram this simplifies to

(2x+5)x=3 2x2+5x-3=0 2x2+6x-x-3=0 2x(x+3)-(x+3)=0 (2x-1)(x+3)=0

Giving x=12 or x=-3.

However, the context implies than x>0, so, x=12.
